Bob Hale, left, and Toni Ferrell lead riders down Cleveland Avenue near Victoria Avenue during the Fort Myers Ride of Silence to raise awareness of cycling safety and pay tribute to bicyclists killed or injured May 20, 2009. About 40 people participated in the ride. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Florida is ranked first in the nation for both bicycle and pedestrian fatalities per capita. Florida led the nation in bicycle fatalities, with 119 deaths in 2007, followed by California with 109, New York with 51, Texas with 48 and Louisiana with 22. Ferrell wore a red band on her arm to signify that she was injured in a crash with a car in 2003; she said she had to have her jaw wired shut for a year due to injuries from the wreck.
